A suspect allegedly sprayed a man with a chemical irritant and robbed him of a bank bag containing cash in the parking lot of a Duluth supermarket on Monday morning, police said.

The incident was reported outside Cub Foods, 615 W. Central Entrance, at 10:50 a.m. The Duluth Police Department continued a search into the evening and was asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect and retrieving evidence.

Police said the victim was preparing to make a bank deposit for his employer when he was robbed of the bag containing an undisclosed amount of money and sprayed with a mace-like substance.

The suspect was described as wearing all black clothing and a high-visibility, yellow traffic vest at the time of the incident. He was last seen fleeing on foot in a wooded area near the store, in the area of Myrtle Street and Robin Avenue.

Anyone who was in the area and may have information is asked to contact police. Additionally, residents of the area are encouraged to search their properties for evidence including blue bank bags, gloves, traffic vests or dark-colored masks.
